This knife far exceeded my expectations. This is my 5th Skalleywag knife and my favorite. I do not write reviews often, but this one deserves a review that’s probably better than I can write and I’d have added more/better pictures, but it seems I’m limited to one and I’m not a great photographer.
But what I love….the overall construction is extremely sturdy, is is NOT a dainty knife, you know when you’re holding it, it has a heft that instills confidence that is going to hold up when you need it. It has beautiful lines and detail. All the edges and details are perfected! I really like the jimping in key spots (shown in the images) it provides outstanding grip where you need it. As another reviewer pointed out, the flipper stud ends up creating a nice finger guard when opened.
Other key features for me, the pocket clip, as you can see in the picture, it’s FLAT! This keeps it from obstructing your pocket when you take something else out. It’s far less likely to snag something and fall out. (Always a concern of mine with other knives). I like to carry it in the “coin” pocket of certain pants I own, so more of an interior pocket so the main pocket is still useful. It also opens with amazing ease. I’ve always been a notch/circle hole knife user, a flipper is now my favorite and fastest method, excluding auto OTF’s but that’s a different category.
Finally and of course, it’s razor sharp!!!
In my opinion you’d be hard pressed to find a better knife at this price point from any brand.

This is my second Blackwater folder, they are a great blade! It’s purpose-driven, don’t use it for prying and tightening screws and stuff.

Ahoy! Started off by buying the mdv and absolutely love it. Its concealabity and lightweight makes it a perfect self-defense knife. Pairing it with the 2 sheaths (standard kydex, and rhino) makes it perfect to carry regardless of what I am wearing Since then, my collection keeps growing and will continue to do so! This company has now become my go-to for knife purchases. As for this review the Balck Water is freaking sweet! Its a beast of a blade, wicked sharp, and the action is smooth as butter! She a bit of a heavy pig but not uncomfortable to carry whatsoever. I have big mitts and it fits my hand like a glove. Before purchasing I was a little apprehensive on the clip and how deep it would sit in my pocket, but she sinks way down in there, barely exposing anything but the clip. I've been carrying it everyday since. The quality and craftsmanship of this company is beyond expectation! Love my Skallywags!

Great Knife! I bought one for my husband and father in law and they both loved them! Thanks for the prompt shipping! You exceeded my expectations and everyone was so excited to get their knives!

When I want to carry a knife of self defense I like to reach for the Blackwater folder. Slim fit, blade profile and smooth action make it a great concealed carry. It is the right tool for what I need done.

I never write reviews about any products I buy.
However, this time I have made an exception because the products are so good.
I bought 5 knives from Skalleywag on the 12th November.
I trans-shipped through Florida to make international delivery easier and after 18 days and 50% customs duty (great packing foresight on behalf of the Skalleywag team halved the pain that customs could have been), my knives arrived in Thailand.
The MDV's are great (the aluminium live blade version accompanied me to the supermarket on the first night - fitting perfectly into the side pocket of my cargo shorts pocket - and I completely forgot it was there).
The Orca will be a good solid worker, but the Blackwater folder, well, that exceeded all expectations. It was the blade I was most looking forward to seeing in real life and it was exactly what I had hoped for.
Very well made, looks good folded, feels strong and sturdy, great weight, perfect size for my 4 3/4" hand, incredibly sharp out of the box (pin prick to prove it - I tested the MDV's first and unconsciously tried the same test with the Blackwater... it does what it is supposed to do, it draws blood with very very little effort).
To my mind, the Blackwater is probably one of the best blade shapes if you take self-defence seriously... or for tactical use. This is not a toy... or a camping knife, this is a serious blade that will do serious damage - easily.
Now that I have seen first hand the quality of the Skallywag products, I will be buying the Guardian, the Spin Drift and the Blackwater fixed blade... you can never have too much protection... even if customs makes it expensive!

Got two of these, both are gifts for friends/family for the Holidays. I keep my list short, and really try to find something that the recipient will enjoy (more importantly, -use-). I've purchased several versions of Skallywag cutlery and I've been impressed each time (folders and Kitchen knives). Plus, the prices are -very- reasonable.

This is my second blade from Skallywag and it is as impressive as the first! The quality of these knives is OUTSTANDING! They are designed to be used unlike so many custom knives that are out there right now. I will be adding more of these tools in the future. Keep up the great work. HooYah!

Excellent knife with smooth action and sharp tanto edges. Scales feel good and spine is thick enough for light pry work. Would buy again!

I carry the knife every day it is my got blade. When others is it they ask where did I get it. Of course I have to Cap and his great blades. It’s a pirate’s like fe for me.

This is a sleek looking knife with a great tactical cutting edge. Opens very smoothly, quite sharp out-of-the box, love the blade design and handle fits well in hand. Product arrived on time in a nice looking package with cool stickers for an added bonus. This is my second knife purchased. First one was MDV Plus which is an amazing blade as well.

Very sharp, one of the smoothest actions I have ever used. This is going to spend a lot of time in my pocket.

I really love the black water folder. The design just blows my mind. I carry it as a secondary EDC. The Black Water Fixed Blade is my primary EDC. The two were made for each other. I sleep well knowing that I carry two ultimate blades. As for the chucks I am going to play with them tomorrow now that I’ve finished construction of my targets, I will let you guys know how they work for me,

Perfect EDC blade! Ideal weight and size. Super rugged.

I have a few Skallywag blades and couldn’t be happier with the quality and customer service. Totally recommend

Wicked...!!!
At first look the Blackwater is slick. Unassuming with a melding of form and function. The knurled grips are not overly aggressive but provide an outstanding grip. Putting the index finger rests on the bade spur and with just the right amount of downward pressure flips out and the smoothest mechanism presents a wicked blade. Actually one of the most wickedly unique blades. It seems to be a combination of clip point and a tanto style. A finger guard is provided by the spur and it fits perfectly in the hand and the thumb rests in the grove at the base of the blade spine. Twist the knife a bit and the liner lock holds like a fixed blade knife but is one hand easy to operate. And one facet of most folding knives underwhelm with is the pocket clip. Not the Blackwater. It is slim and holds firm and yet to catch on clothing or other items carried in the pocket. Lastly, the logo. Most knives plaster the logo or name all over the knife. Seems like a bit of insecurity on their part. As if they have seen the Blackwater and have to say "HEY!! Look over here!! See the name?!?! NO! Don't look at that wicked knife." Anyone who has this knife will tell people the company that makes this knife, no need to look for a big name on the blade, or handle or clip.

BAD ASS BLADE!!!!!
I bought one to use as my edc and it works beautifully. It opens so fast, lightning fast. I was at a gun show and there was a guy selling knives bragging about how smooth his blades operated. I handed him my Blackwater to try out. He flipped it open, looked it over and asked, “Where’s the spring?” He refused to believe me when I told him it isn’t spring assisted. He asked me what I wanted for it. I told him he didn’t have enough money.

Fast, solid and deadly sharp...
I bought the folder as part of the Blackwater combo set. One of the best decisions I have ever made. I wasn't expecting the folder to become my EDC blade, but once I had it in hand I knew it was going to stay close to me always. The bearing setup lets this knife open so fast and smooth. Sinfully fast. Positive lock in the open position, texturing in handle and great design work in shape make this knife feel so comfortable and confident when using it. Blade shape also adds to its functionality and serviceability. Straight edges make it a dream to keep sharp, and the tip makes it nice when you need a small, precise incision/cut.
And while this knife is designed as a fighter, it has so many useful applications for EDC. Mine has been carried and used to the point that parts of it are no longer black. To say I love it is an understatement at the very least. Put one in your hand and you will understand.
